# Reply to a conversation

> Open a Sayless inbox conversation, draft a reply, add attachments and internal context, and send a response back to the customer channel.

Conversations are where inbound customer messages become team work. Reply from the conversation detail page when the next step is a direct response.

## Overview

Open the inbox, choose a conversation, review the message history, and reply from the editor. While replying, keep the conversation properties up to date so teammates know who owns the thread and what state it is in.

The conversation detail page has three main areas:

* The header, where you can navigate back, move between conversations, create a ticket, open the action menu, and toggle the details panel.
* The thread, where messages, activity entries, attachments, and the reply editor appear.
* The details panel, where you manage status, labels, linked tickets, company, contact, and related conversations.

Go to [Inbox](https://joinsayless.com/\{workspace}/inbox).

| Area | What you can do |
| ------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| Header | Navigate, create a ticket, open actions, toggle Details. |
| Thread | Read messages, activity, attachments, and write replies. |
| Details panel | Manage properties and relationships. |

## Reply to a conversation

Use replies for customer-facing communication.

### Open a conversation

Go to the inbox and choose one of the inbox views: All conversations, Assigned to me, Shared, Unassigned, or Snoozed.

Open a conversation to view the thread, message history, metadata panel, related company or contact, and any linked tickets.

If you open a stale or deleted conversation URL, Sayless redirects back to the inbox when it cannot load the thread.

> Direct conversation URLs use the pattern `https://joinsayless.com/{workspace}/inbox/message/{conversationPath}`.

### Write a reply

Use the reply editor to write the response. The editor supports formatted text, links, lists, mentions, attachments, and inline images where available.

Keep replies focused on the customer-facing answer. If the message creates internal follow-up, create a ticket instead of hiding the next steps inside the reply.

### Add recipients

Email conversations may show recipient fields such as To and CC. Use these when the reply needs to include additional people.

For channel-based conversations such as Slack, WhatsApp, Telegram, or Microsoft Teams, recipients are generally implied by the source thread or group.

### Send the reply

Send the reply when the message is ready. If the conversation needs more work after the reply, create or link a ticket before moving on.

If sending fails, keep the thread open until you know whether the message was delivered. Check the channel connection if messages repeatedly fail.

## Use the reply editor

The reply editor is built for quick responses with enough structure for detailed answers.

### Formatting

Use formatting for readability, not decoration. Lists and short paragraphs are easier for customers and teammates to scan.

### Attachments

Attach files when the recipient needs supporting material. Use inline images when the image is part of the explanation.

Attachments upload before they can be sent. Large files or unsupported file types may fail validation.

### Drafts

Sayless preserves editor state while you work in the conversation. Before navigating away from a long reply, confirm it is sent or still available as a draft.

Draft state is local to the conversation workflow. Do not use an unsent reply as the only place to store important internal context.

## Keep the conversation current

Replying is only one part of the workflow.

### Update ownership

Assign the conversation to the person responsible for the next step.

### Update status

Change the status when the conversation moves forward, waits on a customer, or is complete.

### Link follow-up work

Create a ticket from the conversation when the reply creates work that needs tracking.

Use the ticket button in the conversation header to create a ticket with the current conversation already linked. This is the fastest way to keep the source thread attached to the follow-up work.

## Details panel

Use the Details toggle in the conversation header to show or hide the metadata panel.

### Details

The details section contains core conversation properties, including status and assignee.

### Labels

Labels categorize the conversation for filtering and reporting.

### Tickets

The ticket section shows tickets linked to the conversation and gives the team a path from customer message to tracked follow-up.

### Company and contact

Company and contact sections attach the conversation to account and person records.

### Related conversations

Related conversations help connect separate threads that belong to the same customer issue or account context.
